Fault warning vs level warning — understanding the difference

An “AdBlue Low” message is a level warning. Adding more AdBlue resolves it. An “AdBlue System Fault” or “Emissions System Fault” is a different category entirely — it means something in the system has failed, and more fluid will not change that. If you have added AdBlue and the warning has not cleared, you have a fault, not a low-level issue.

The Most Common Ford Transit AdBlue Fault Causes

1. Crystallised or Blocked Dosing Injector

The dosing injector sits in the exhaust system and injects a fine mist of AdBlue at precisely timed intervals. Over time — particularly on vans used in urban stop-start conditions — AdBlue residue can dry out and crystallise around the injector tip. This is one of the most common AdBlue faults across all van types, and the Transit is no exception.

When the injector is partially blocked, dosing becomes inconsistent. The NOx sensor downstream detects that emissions reduction is below the expected threshold and the ECU generates a fault. In some cases, the injector body or tip cracks under thermal stress, which requires full replacement.

Symptoms: SCR or emissions system fault, fault returns after clearing, stored DTC codes related to dosing or NOx deviation.

2. Failed NOx Sensor

The Transit typically uses two NOx sensors — one upstream of the SCR converter and one downstream. The downstream sensor is the one most commonly cited in fault scenarios: it measures whether the SCR system has successfully reduced NOx output. If it fails or sends incorrect readings, the ECU cannot confirm the system is working and logs an SCR fault.

NOx sensors are electronic components subject to wear on high-mileage commercial vehicles. They are also vulnerable to damage from contamination if the dosing system has been injecting poor-quality AdBlue over an extended period.

Symptoms: Emissions fault warning, engine management light, P20EE or similar fault codes, fault returns after sensor replacement if the root cause was AdBlue quality.

3. AdBlue Pump or Pressure Issue

The AdBlue pump pressurises the system and pushes fluid through to the dosing injector. On the Transit, pump failures are relatively common on vans with over 100,000 miles. The pump can fail mechanically, develop a pressure fault, or stop priming correctly after a low-tank event.

When the pump cannot maintain adequate pressure, the dosing injector receives insufficient fluid or stops dosing entirely. The system detects zero or low dosing activity and generates a fault — often a countdown-type warning rather than an immediate no-start.

4. AdBlue Tank Heater Failure

The warning may appear after a cold start and then clear once the engine warms up — but the underlying fault will still be stored.

This fault is more common in older Transits and in vehicles that are parked outside in exposed locations during winter months.

5. SCR Catalyst Efficiency Fault

Can You Drive a Ford Transit with an AdBlue Fault?

If the warning is an early-stage level alert and there is no countdown message, the vehicle will usually start and run normally. However, if a countdown is active, the van will not restart once the engine is switched off after the countdown reaches zero.

If the warning is a system fault — not a level alert — adding AdBlue will not clear it, and the countdown clock may still be running. In this situation, continuing to drive the van without getting the fault diagnosed means you are running down the clock on your next start.
