What goes wrong with an AdBlue tank?

The AdBlue tank stores the DEF fluid and houses the level sensor and a heater that stops it freezing in cold weather. Tanks crack and leak, the level sensor fails (giving false low-AdBlue warnings even when the tank is full), the heater fails (warnings in winter), and AdBlue can crystallise or become contaminated — including the wrong fluid being put in the tank. We diagnose the tank, sensor and heater, repair or replace what’s needed, and confirm the tank holds AdBlue and reads and doses correctly. Common on PSA vehicles (Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall), Mercedes and Ford.

Common AdBlue tank faults

The faults we most often find on the tank side of the system.

Leaking or cracked tank

Splits and cracks that let AdBlue weep out, leaving stains and triggering warnings.

Faulty level sensor

False low-AdBlue warnings even with a full tank, or a level that won’t read correctly.

Failed tank heater

Cold-weather warnings when the heater that stops AdBlue freezing fails.

Crystallisation / contamination

Crystallised or dirty AdBlue, or contamination that stops the system dosing correctly.

Wrong fluid in the tank

AdBlue topped up with the wrong fluid — we drain, flush and refill correctly.

Blocked pickup or lines

Blocked or crystallised supply lines that starve the pump and injector.

Repair, replace or sensor only?

We do whatever the tank actually needs — nothing more.

Sensor or heater only

Where the tank is sound, we replace just the failed level sensor or heater and clear the fault.

Tank repair or replacement

Where the tank is cracked or leaking, we repair or fit a replacement and confirm it holds.

Drain & flush

Where AdBlue is contaminated, crystallised or the wrong fluid is in the tank, we drain, flush and refill correctly.

AdBlue tank repair — common questions

Quick answers before you book.

My AdBlue tank is leaking — can you repair it?

Yes. Depending on the damage we either repair the tank or fit a replacement, then confirm it holds AdBlue and the system reads and doses correctly. We diagnose and quote before any work.

I keep getting a low-AdBlue warning even though the tank is full — why?

That’s the classic sign of a failed level sensor. We test the sensor and tank, replace the sensor if needed and clear the false warning.

I’ve put AdBlue in my diesel tank by mistake — can you help?

Yes — don’t start the engine if you can avoid it. We drain and flush the fuel system and put it right. Tell us when you book so we arrive prepared.

Which makes do you cover?

All major diesel makes — tank faults are especially common on Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall (PSA), Mercedes and Ford vans and cars.

How much does AdBlue tank repair cost?

It depends on whether it’s the tank, level sensor or heater, and on your vehicle, so we always quote up front. Tell us your make, model and year and the fault you have.

Which areas do you cover?

We’re fully mobile across Birmingham & the West Midlands — Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall, Solihull, West Bromwich, Sutton Coldfield, Cannock and surrounding areas, and further afield by arrangement.
