How the Mercedes Sprinter AdBlue System Works

Euro 6 Sprinters use an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system to meet emissions regulations. AdBlue — a 32.5% urea solution — is stored in a dedicated tank, typically located under the load area floor or behind the cab depending on the Sprinter variant and body configuration.

The system uses a dosing module to inject AdBlue into the exhaust stream upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. Inside the converter, the urea reacts with nitrogen oxides in the exhaust and breaks them down into nitrogen and water vapour — reducing harmful NOx emissions to within legal limits.

The Sprinter’s SCR system is monitored by NOx sensors upstream and downstream of the converter, a urea quality sensor in the tank, and pressure sensors in the dosing circuit. The SCR control module — separate from the main ECU in many Sprinter variants — manages all of this. When any reading falls outside acceptable parameters, the system logs a fault and alerts the driver.

Unlike some other vans, many Mercedes Sprinters have a dedicated SCR control module (sometimes called the BlueTEC control unit) that is separate from the main engine ECU. This means that diagnosing an AdBlue fault on a Sprinter requires equipment that can communicate with both the engine management system and the SCR module independently. Generic OBD tools often miss Sprinter-specific SCR fault codes.

It is worth noting that different Sprinter model years use slightly different message wording. Some older Sprinters may show a generic service warning light rather than a specific AdBlue message. The Most Common Mercedes Sprinter AdBlue Fault Causes

1. AdBlue Dosing Injector Failure or Crystallisation

The dosing injector injects AdBlue into the exhaust at precisely the right rate and timing. On the Sprinter, the injector sits in a thermally demanding environment inside the exhaust system, and over time — particularly on vans with high urban mileage — AdBlue residue can crystallise around the injector tip and block or restrict flow.

When dosing is inconsistent or insufficient, the NOx sensor downstream detects that emissions are not being reduced to the required level. The SCR module logs a fault and the driver warning appears.

Crystallisation damage can sometimes be resolved with professional cleaning, but a cracked or internally damaged injector requires replacement. Replacement Sprinter injectors are vehicle-specific and the fitting process requires care to avoid further damage to the exhaust system threads.

Symptoms: BlueTEC fault warning, fault code relating to dosing performance or NOx deviation, fault returns after clearing.

2. NOx Sensor Failure — Upstream or Downstream

The Sprinter uses two NOx sensors to monitor the SCR system’s performance. The upstream sensor (before the converter) measures NOx entering the system. The downstream sensor measures NOx exiting after conversion. The SCR module calculates conversion efficiency based on the difference between the two readings.

If either sensor fails — or if one develops an intermittent fault — the calculated efficiency will be wrong and a fault will be logged. Downstream sensor failures are particularly common on higher-mileage Sprinters, and the fault code P20EE (SCR catalyst efficiency below threshold) is frequently triggered by a failed downstream NOx sensor rather than an actual catalyst problem.

Symptoms: P20EE fault code, emissions fault warning, fault returns after AdBlue top-up, multiple faults logged simultaneously in the SCR module.

3. SCR Control Module Communication Fault

Because the Sprinter uses a separate SCR control module to manage the BlueTEC system, communication faults between the SCR module and the main ECU are a known issue — particularly on vehicles that have had battery issues, software updates, or water ingress near the module’s connector.

When the main ECU cannot communicate with the SCR module, it defaults to a fault state and generates a warning. These faults can sometimes appear as generic engine management warnings rather than specific AdBlue messages, making them easy to misdiagnose.

Symptoms: U-code fault codes (CAN bus communication), engine management light with no obvious cause, AdBlue system warnings without a clear component failure.

4. AdBlue Quality or Contamination Fault

The Sprinter’s urea quality sensor checks that the AdBlue in the tank meets the required 32.5% concentration. If the fluid is too dilute, too concentrated, or contaminated — for example by diesel fuel entering the AdBlue filler by mistake — the quality sensor will flag it and the system will generate a fault.

Contamination scenarios are particularly damaging on the Sprinter because poorly specified fluid can coat the dosing injector and degrade the NOx sensors over time, leading to multiple component failures if not caught early.

Symptoms: AdBlue quality warning, fault returns shortly after a top-up, multiple SCR system faults appearing together, crystallisation visible around the filler cap area.

5. AdBlue Pump Pressure Fault

The AdBlue pump on the Sprinter maintains the system at a specific operating pressure. If the pump fails — or if there is a leak in the dosing circuit causing pressure to drop — the system cannot deliver AdBlue at the required rate. This generates a reductant pressure fault code and triggers the countdown warning system.

Pump failures can be mechanical (the pump motor fails) or related to a leaking connection or cracked delivery line. Both produce similar fault codes and both require physical inspection to differentiate.

Symptoms: Reductant pressure fault code (P228C or similar), countdown message with a full AdBlue tank, no dosing activity detected in live data.

Note that Mercedes-Benz also uses proprietary fault codes that appear in the SCR control module and are not visible with standard OBD2 tools. A full Sprinter diagnosis requires equipment that can access the full vehicle architecture, including the BlueTEC module.

Can You Drive a Mercedes Sprinter with an AdBlue Fault?

It depends on the type of fault and what stage the warning system is at.

A simple level warning with no countdown means the van will continue to start and run normally until the tank empties completely. You have time to top up or arrange diagnostics at a convenient time.

If a countdown is active, the Sprinter will not restart once the engine is switched off after the counter reaches zero. The distance shown is not a precise figure — it can vary depending on driving style and conditions — so do not treat it as a guaranteed window.

If the warning is a “BlueTEC System Fault” or “Visit Workshop” message, the countdown may be running in the background even if it is not prominently displayed. Topping up with AdBlue will not resolve a component fault, and continuing to drive with an active system fault may result in the van not restarting at an inconvenient location.

The process involves reprogramming the Sprinter’s ECU (and where applicable, the SCR control module) to remove all AdBlue system requirements from the engine management logic. Can I clear a Sprinter AdBlue fault with a generic OBD reader?

Generic OBD readers can clear some stored codes, but they cannot always access the Sprinter’s SCR control module — which is where many AdBlue-specific faults are stored. Even if the fault appears to clear, the root cause remains. Without the correct diagnostic equipment, you cannot confirm which component has failed or whether the fix has been effective.

Does the Mercedes Sprinter AdBlue fault affect engine power?

In some cases, yes.
