Stage 1 — Low AdBlue level

At this stage, the vehicle continues to run normally. You have enough range to refill before restrictions kick in. A standard top-up of 10–15 litres from a reputable source (meeting ISO 22241) will clear this warning once the level is confirmed by the sensor.
Stage 2 — AdBlue system fault
If the system detects a fault — not just low fluid, but a component problem — you’ll see something like “AdBlue system fault — see dealer” or an orange or red warning lamp with a fault code stored in the ECU. At this point, the Daily may begin the countdown to no-start restriction. Simply adding AdBlue won’t fix this warning because the problem is with the system itself, not the fluid level.
Stage 3 — Engine will not restart
The most urgent warning. This appears when the countdown has run out and the vehicle is on its last permitted start. After this start, the engine will not restart until the AdBlue fault is resolved. At this stage, the vehicle needs to be dealt with immediately — do not park it somewhere you can’t get it recovered from.

The most straightforward cause. If the tank runs dry, the SCR system can’t function and fault warnings will appear immediately. This is easily resolved by refilling with fresh, ISO 22241-compliant AdBlue from a trusted source. Supermarket-grade AdBlue in 10-litre containers is usually fine; avoid cheap off-brand fluid that may not meet the standard.
2. Contaminated AdBlue fluid
Using the wrong fluid — water, diesel, or poor-quality urea solution — can cause significant damage to the SCR system. The NOx sensors and dosing injector are particularly sensitive to contamination. If contaminated fluid has been used, the tank, pump, and potentially the injector will need flushing or replacement.
3. NOx sensor failure
Most Euro 6 Iveco Dailys run two NOx sensors — one upstream of the SCR catalyst and one downstream. These sensors monitor the exhaust gas composition before and after the AdBlue is introduced. When either sensor fails, the ECU can’t confirm that the system is reducing NOx effectively, and a fault is logged. NOx sensor faults are among the most common AdBlue-related codes on the Daily platform.
4. AdBlue pump or dosing unit failure
The dosing pump controls the precise amount of AdBlue injected into the exhaust stream. If the pump fails or becomes blocked — often with AdBlue crystals that form when the fluid dries out — the SCR system can’t operate. Pump replacement is possible but expensive, and on older Dailys the cost can approach the value of the vehicle.
5. AdBlue heater fault
In cold weather, AdBlue freezes at -11°C. Most Dailys have an integrated heating element in the tank and lines to prevent this. If the heater fails, the system may show faults even when the AdBlue level and quality are correct — particularly in winter or after an overnight frost.
6. SCR catalyst degradation
The SCR catalyst converts NOx using the AdBlue-derived ammonia. Over time and with high mileage, catalysts lose efficiency. The ECU monitors catalyst performance; if it drops below the threshold required under Euro 6 standards, a fault is logged even if all other system components are working correctly.
7. ECU software issue
Some AdBlue faults on the Daily are software-related rather than hardware failures. A corrupted ECU map, outdated firmware, or a communication error between the AdBlue control module and the main ECU can trigger fault warnings even when the hardware is fine. In these cases, a software fix is both appropriate and cost-effective.

On an older van, these costs need to be weighed carefully against the vehicle’s value.
Option 3: Software-based AdBlue delete
For many Iveco Daily operators, a permanent software-based solution is the most practical route. This involves reprogramming the ECU to remove the AdBlue system from the vehicle’s operational parameters entirely. The system no longer monitors AdBlue, no longer generates fault codes or countdown warnings, and the vehicle operates normally without requiring AdBlue.
